If you have found your skin looking dull and drab lately and you just feel like something is missing, there is an easy solution that will brighten your skin and give you instant results. If you don’t want to do anything invasive, but you want your skin to look better, brighter, and younger, we have the answer. Let us introduce you to the chemical peel: a long-lasting skin treatment done right at one of our two Refresh Evolution locations in British Columbia, Canada.
How Long Does a Chemical Peel Last?
Results vary based on the type of peel you choose and how frequently you get peels after your initial treatment. Making this effective treatment a regular staple in your skincare routine will ensure that your skin maintains a healthy, vibrant glow for years. Your initial chemical peel can provide you long-lasting results for as long as 6 months following your appointment.
What Is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is an in-office treatment that targets the signs of ageing on the face, hands, and neck. It is a safe, non-invasive, and relatively quick treatment. You don’t have to schedule your life around the appointment: you’ll be able to lay comfortably as the treatment is applied, just as you would during a facial. Once you try a chemical peel at our office, you will wonder how you ever lived without them.
What Happens During the Treatment?
A specialized solution is applied to the area undergoing treatment. At our office, we offer a scientifically formulated peel that has specialized ingredients that provide visible results. Once the solution sits on your face for a certain amount of time, it is removed.
The entire process takes approximately 30 minutes, and then you’ll be on your way to beautiful skin. Even though we remove the actual solution from your skin, it continues its magic well after you leave the office.
What Does It Do?
The chemical solution essentially removes a layer of skin from your face, taking with it all of the dead skin cells that cause your skin to look dull. As it penetrates deep into your skin, the top layer undergoes a deep exfoliation process.
The top layer of the skin peels off, exposing new, healthier skin. This peel also increases your body’s production of collagen due to its response to the perceived injury which is responsible for that healthy, youthful, voluminous skin.
Will I Peel?
Some people do experience a literal peeling off of the skin following the treatment, while others do not. Whether or not you experience peeling simply depends on how many dead skin cells are present on your face at the time of treatment and how quickly your skin cells turn over on a normal basis.
Just know that whether or not you peel, your skin is still benefitting and is still going through the process of deep exfoliation and cell turnover.
What Does It Target?
This new layer of skin will give your skin a visibly smoother appearance. You may be surprised at just how effectively it will address many other areas of concern as well. This peel will:
- Reduce your pore size
- Correct uneven skin tone and texture
- Improve the appearance of rosacea
- Improve acne and reduce future breakouts
- Improve the appearance of dark spots and melasma
- Reduce the appearance of fine lines
- Remove prior skin damage
- Give the skin a vibrant glow
- Activate and increase collagen production
The Three Types of Peels
There are different types of chemical peels that provide different results. The main factor distinguishing these three from each other is the strength of their ingredients. When you come in for your appointment, our skincare experts will review these different types of peels, and based on your skin concerns and ultimate goals will help you choose the peel that’s right for you.
1. The Light Peel
This is the most common peel because it works for almost everyone. Light peels can be used frequently and typically involve the use of less potent chemicals including glycolic acid, lactic acid, and AHA’s. These chemicals only reach into the top layers of skin. The goal of a light peel is to exfoliate your skin and address minor, common skin concerns including:
- Acne scars
- Enlarged pores
- Poor skin tone and texture
- Sun damage
- Fine lines
Scheduling Light Peels
Once you have your initial peel appointment, we recommend that you have light peels applied frequently in order to reach the level of exfoliation necessary to keep that youthful glow.
Plan on scheduling your first 4 to 6 peels with 1 to 2 months between each peel. Your skin will continue to improve following each and every peel. After you reach your skin goal, maintaining your skin’s appearance is as simple as scheduling a peel every 4 to 6 months.
2. The Medium Peel
The next level of peel is the medium peel, which is formulated with stronger ingredients, including TCA and refined glycolic acids. The primary goal of this peel is to penetrate into deeper layers of the skin than the light peel is able to.
The medium peel will address a host of skin concerns, including deep wrinkles, dark spots on the skin, and more severe skin and acne scars.
Scheduling Medium Peels
If the medium peel is the right peel for your skin type and concerns, you can still schedule these peels frequently, just less frequently than you would a light peel.
Initially, you will need 2 to 3 medium peels, making sure that there are two months between each appointment. Then, you will be able to maintain your results by choosing a light or medium peel every 6 months.
3. The Deep Peel
The least commonly used peel is the deep peel. These peels are so strong that they are recommended as a one-time treatment. They are typically used for severe skin issues, such as the removal of melanoma cells and as a form of preventative treatment in keeping cancerous cells at bay.
The deep peel may also be used as a one-time solution for very deep wrinkles or scars that have not responded to the use of light or medium peels.
Scheduling Deep Peels
Due to their intensity, a consultation will be necessary prior to a deep peel. If you feel as though you need this peel to address your skin concerns, we will be able to walk you through your options during a consultation at our office.
Making Your Peel Last Longer: What to Do Before and After Your Peel
You play a large role in determining just how long your peel results last. When you follow some directives both before and after your peel, that, combined with regular treatments every few months, will maximize the length of your results so that you won’t ever have to go back to your “before” picture skin.
Before Your Peel
There are steps that you can take well before you even have your peel treatment that will ensure your skin is ready for the peel. Doing so will help you get the most out of your peel.
One Month Before
One month before your appointment, come visit our offices so that we can start you on a new skincare regimen that when combined with your peel, will maximize your results. We will provide you with a cleanser, serums, and a moisturizer that best suits your skin type.
Postpone any laser or waxing treatments until after your peel. Regarding injectables or microneedling, schedule your appointments a month before your peel for the best results.
1 to 2 Weeks Before
If you plan on dermaplaning, schedule it 1 to 2 weeks prior to your treatment. This will help increase the effectiveness of your peel. This is also the time to avoid the sun to reduce any further sun damage and prepare your skin for treatment.
At this time, be diligent with your skincare and make sure you are cleansing, using serums, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen each and every day.
1 to 2 Days Before
If you use any skincare products that contain any form of Retinol, AHA’s, or BHA’s, now is the time to stop using these products. You will be able to resume their use following your treatment.
Also, be sure to increase your water intake during this time. Keeping your skin hydrated will balance its moisture content and help you get the best results following your peel.
After Your Peel
There are some specific aftercare instructions that must be followed after your peel to ensure that you get and maintain the best and longest-lasting results possible. Following these instructions will help your skin glow and maintain its new, youthful appearance for much longer.
Avoid the Sun
After your appointment, you will need to be very careful when you’re in the sun. To prevent damage from the sun following your appointment, remember to always wear an SPF of at least 30. Try to avoid excessive exposure to the sun following your treatment.
Protect Your Skin From the Elements
If you know you are going to be in the sun for even a short amount of time, in addition to sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses for additional protection from the sun’s rays. This is especially important if your purpose for getting a peel was to help correct prior sun damage. Also, may patients have found Vaseline as an effective product that protects the skin from the wind and other outdoor elements following treatment.
Take Care of Your Skin
Following your peel, use a gentle cleanser designed for sensitive skin that is free from irritants including fragrances and chemicals. Moisturize your skin both day and night to hydrate the new, exposed layer.
Treat the new layer of skin with serums, as doing so will infuse the skin with vitamin-rich ingredients. Hyaluronic acid is a good serum to use daily due to its gentle, hydrating nature. Add in a cooling sheet mask into your skincare routine to calm and hydrate the skin.
Am I a Candidate?
Most people will benefit from regular chemical peels. Peels are simple, effective, and natural ways exfoliate the skin and keep it looking fresh, youthful, and glowing. However, different skin types require different attention.
At our offices, we’ll analyze your skin type to determine which peel is best for you. We will also set up a maintenance schedule for you so that you’ll know when to return for recurrent chemical peels in order to maintain results.
